Who won the 2016 Cross Training Games and what was the prize?

The CrossFit Games are a competition that aims to find the fittest on earth, among the fittest. It began in 2007 as a small competition and has grown to be a worldwide competition since then. But, who was the fittest athlete in the Crossfit Games in 2016?

Who were the 2016 Crossfit Games winners?

Being a professional Crossfit athlete cannot possibly be an easy task. If you don’t believe me, ask Mathew Fraser, aka Mat Fraser, the winner of the 2016 Crossfit Games for the men category, or Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir, winner for the female category. You can also ask any of the winners from the team category, Crossfit Mayhem Freedom. But, who are they? And what did they do to win the Crossfit Games in 2016?

What you need to know about 2016 Crossfit Games winner Mathew Fraser!

Also known as Mat Fraser, he is a professional Crossfit athlete who, previous to winning in 2016, had already placed second in the 2014 and 2015 Crossfit Games. From 2014 to the first year he won the Crossfit Games, he placed first in regionals, seventh in the open in 2014 and 2016, and first in the open in 2015.

Before becoming a Crossfit Athlete, he was an Olympic weightlifter that was injured in 2009.  He does not have a fixed workout program. Due to the unpredictability of the Crossfit Games, he tries to prepare for everything. Before 2015, he did not have a strict diet either and would eat anything he desired. When he placed second in 2015 he decided to take a more serious approach with his diet.

What you need to know about Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir!

Katrín Tanja Davíðsdóttir is a Crossfit Athlete who had already won first place in the 2015 Crossfit Games, making 2016 her second year in a row.  From 2012 to the first year she won the Crossfit Games, she placed second in regionals in 2012 and 2015, third in 2013, sixth in 2014 and first in 2016. She placed 21st in the open in 2012, 37th in 2013, 122nd in 2014 and 14th in 2015 and 2016.

She began doing Crossfit in 2011 when she was 18. Previous to that, she was a gymnast for 10 years and competed in track and field for one year. She has trained in CrossFit Reykjavik, Crossfit Stodin and is currently training at Crossfit New England (United States).

What you need to know about Crossfit Mayhem Freedom!

It was founded and led to victory by Rich Froning in 2015 and 2016. It is one of only two teams to win the Crossfit Games twice in a row. Despite having competed before in 2013, they won until Rich Froning retired from individual competitions and joined their team. Before that, in 2013, they placed 27th.

They won in regionals as well for both years and kept five of the six members they originally had with them in 2015.

What did they win?

Aside from the title of the Fittest on Earth, the prize was a total of $275,000 for winning the Crossfit Games in 2016. Since then, the prize for winning has gone up.
